Ginsterhof Hospital
Der goldene HandschuhGinsterhof Hospital is the site of Fiete Honka’s prolonged recovery after Farmer Frerk’s attack, a three-month stay that preserves his life without undoing the bodily damage. In the account of his escape and return to consciousness, the hospital stands between near-fatal abandonment and a survival marked by lasting injury.
The Hospital After the Attack
Farmer Frerk rams Fiete’s folding bicycle with his tractor, throwing him against a fence post and leaving him gravely injured. After inspecting the damage, Frerk returns to the farm without calling an ambulance or a doctor. Fiete is found twenty-five hours later, more dead than alive, and his condition remains precarious for days.
Injuries and Recovery
At Ginsterhof Hospital, the damage is specific and severe: Fiete has a fractured skull base, has lost all his upper teeth, and has open wounds on his thighs. Fragments of his shattered teeth remain embedded in his upper jaw. Cleaning tar and its small pellets from his wounds causes terrible pain. He stays in the hospital for three months, but his nose and teeth are never properly repaired.
A Brief Human Encounter
During the aftermath of his injuries, Helga gently strokes Fiete’s back as he weeps from exhaustion. He experiences her touch as a form of tenderness far more valuable than sex, but the moment lasts only five or ten minutes before she takes her leave with good wishes. Once she is gone, he becomes nearly frantic over what he believes was a missed opportunity. The passage places this brief intimacy beside the hospital recovery: physical survival brings him into contact with care, but does not give him the ease to respond to it.
